Fabric choice is one of the most powerful ways to elevate your wardrobe, especially after 50. Even the simplest silhouette looks refined when it’s made from a luxurious, well constructed material. To find out which fabrics consistently read as polished and high-end, I asked designers what they reach for when creating elevated everyday pieces. Their answers were surprisingly aligned certain textures, fibers, and finishes always look expensive, even at affordable price points. Here are the nine fabrics that designers say instantly upgrade any outfit.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Cashmere
  • 2. Merino Wool
  • 3. Silk (and Silk Blends)
  • 4. Linen
  • 5. Tweed
  • 6. Leather (and High Quality Faux Leather)
  • 7. Tencel (Lyocell)
  • 8. Alpaca Wool
  • 9. Velvet

1. Cashmere

Designers unanimously rank cashmere at the top because of its softness, drape, and timeless elegance. Unlike basic wool blends, cashmere has a smooth, plush hand-feel that settles beautifully on the body without adding bulk. It holds color richly and resists pilling when well-made. Even a simple crewneck or scarf looks luxurious in cashmere, making it a go to for elevated basics. For a more budget friendly option, designers recommend blends that still offer the lightweight warmth and refined texture of true cashmere.

2. Merino Wool

Merino is praised for being both practical and polished. Designers love it because it breathes well, resists odors, and drapes in a way that flatters without clinging. Unlike stiff wool, merino has a fluid quality that feels elevated, especially in sweaters, knit dresses, and fine-gauge tops. It also maintains its shape far better than synthetic knits, which tend to look worn quickly. Merino is ideal for those who want everyday pieces that feel sophisticated yet comfortable and functional.

3. Silk (and Silk Blends)

Silk instantly communicates luxury thanks to its gentle sheen, fluidity, and smooth texture. Designers note that even a simple silk blouse or scarf elevates an outfit because the fabric naturally catches light without appearing flashy. It also drapes beautifully, skimming the body in a flattering way. For those who find pure silk too delicate or high-maintenance, silk blends offer a more affordable and durable alternative while still maintaining that elevated look and feel.

4. Linen

Clean, breathable, and understated, linen is one of designers’ favorite fabrics for achieving effortless sophistication. Its natural texture adds interest without overwhelming the outfit, and its slightly rumpled look gives an intentional, lived in elegance rather than appearing sloppy. High quality linen softens beautifully over time and works across seasons. Designers say linen trousers, button-downs, and dresses consistently look expensive, especially in natural, muted tones like ivory, olive, or oatmeal.

5. Tweed

Tweed has long been associated with luxury houses, and designers still rely on it for its structured, refined appearance. The texture adds depth to an outfit, and the weight gives garments a tailored, polished silhouette. Tweed jackets, skirts, and coats instantly elevate basics even jeans or simple knitwear. Designers note that while tweed can feel traditional, modern cuts and softer color palettes make it feel fresh and sophisticated for today’s wardrobes.

6. Leather (and High Quality Faux Leather)

Leather reads expensive because of its rich texture, durability, and natural drape. Designers love its ability to add instant polish to both casual and dressy outfits. Whether it’s a sleek jacket, a structured bag, or refined footwear, leather adds visual weight and sophistication. Even faux leather can look high end when it has a matte finish and minimal grain. Designers emphasize avoiding shiny, plastic looking versions, which tend to cheapen an outfit quickly.

7. Tencel (Lyocell)

Tencel is one of designers’ favorite modern fabrics because it blends sustainability with elegance. It has a silky, smooth feel, drapes beautifully, and resists wrinkling far better than traditional cotton. Tencel dresses, trousers, and blouses look polished without feeling fussy. Designers particularly love its soft sheen, which mimics luxury fabrics like silk but is more durable and easy care. It’s ideal for women who want comfort and refinement in equal measure.

8. Alpaca Wool

Alpaca is praised for its plush, airy warmth without the bulk or itchiness of traditional wool. Designers say alpaca pieces look expensive because the fibers have a subtle halo effect and a naturally soft luster. The material also holds structure while remaining lightweight, giving sweaters and coats a luxurious, cloud like appearance. When blended with other high-quality fibers, alpaca creates pieces that feel indulgent but wearable for everyday winter dressing.

9. Velvet

Velvet’s rich texture and depth make it one of the most inherently luxurious fabrics. Designers highlight that its ability to absorb and reflect light creates a dimensional look that reads instantly elevated even in simple silhouettes. While some people reserve velvet for special occasions, modern designers are incorporating it into everyday pieces like blazers, flats, and relaxed trousers. When the velvet has a matte finish and high density pile, it looks especially expensive and timeless.
