It can be difficult to understand what tops to wear as a woman over the age of 60. The style of top that you choose to wear with each outfit can completely change the look you are going for. Some tops can show a lot of skin, while others may camouflage the parts of your body that you want to accentuate.

The Tops Guide for Women Over 60-1

Tops will take up half of your outfit since they cover the entire top half of your body. The right top will make you feel comfortable and beautiful, while also appearing classy and chic. This guide will help you learn what tops to search for as a woman over 60, and what tops you definitely need to avoid.

Table of Contents

  • Cashmere sweaters
  • The classic white blouse
  • Caution with cardigan
  • Caution with chunky turtlenecks
  • Caution with floral tops

  • Caution with spaghetti strapped tops

Bold pattern tops

It can be easy to fall into the habit of wearing all neutral colors because they are simple and easy to style. But sometimes an outfit needs some color in order to really work.

A bold pattern is naturally dressier, so you will be able to wear a splash of color to the office on days when you might need it.

A boldly patterned top can become a statement piece for each outfit you wear it with. You can surround the top with neutral plain clothing because the shirt adds enough spice to your look. It can become aging to constantly wear grays and tans with every outfit you put together.

As a woman over 60, it is important to add color and creativity to your closet so that you can dress boldly and show that age does not take away from your ability to make a statement and stand out in the crowd.

Silk tank tops

Sometimes tank tops can be too casual or unflattering for women over 60. They often show a lot of skin and draw attention to your arms. This can often be due to the fabric and the fact that it is not an eye-catching material.

In order to wear a tank top and still create an elevated aesthetic, try searching for a silk tank top. This material is both dressy and elegant, and will successfully draw more attention to the shirt itself, rather than any spots on the upper half of your body that you may feel insecure about.

Styling tips with silk tank tops

Silk tank tops can also be paired with various blazers or cardigans, in case you want to add more coverage for the upper half of your body.

The fabric is formal enough to wear for more sophisticated events, and the tank top style is practical enough, which means you can build a layered outfit.

Cashmere sweaters

When you put on a sweater, the fabric used to make the sweater can often have a large impact on the way the sweater fits and how fashionable it is.

Cashmere sweaters are both sophisticated and beautiful for every woman who wears them. The soft material is warm and welcoming. Cashmere sweaters are an ideal choice for women over 60 because they are dressy, classy, and comfortable all at once. This is the perfect style of sweater for women who want to stay warm while also avoiding sweaters that are aging.

The classic white blouse

Every woman over the age of 60 needs a staple top that they can depend on and include in many outfits. Versatility is an important factor to consider when searching for tops, since you may not want a giant closet as you get older.

The classic white blouse should be in every older women’s closet. You can wear a white blouse with a wide variety of different outfits. You can also use a plain white blouse to tone down a bolder outfit.

Fabric to consider when choosing a white blouse

It is important to buy a white blouse that is made of dependable fabric.

You will want to avoid any embarrassing situations where your bra will show through the top.

A more expensive white blouse will ensure that you are covered up and your bra stays concealed.

Caution with cardigan

Cardigans are a comfortable fashion essential that never goes out of style. A lot of older women make the mistake of buttoning up their cardigans and wearing them as a top. Cardigans can be very chic but often lose that flair when they are worn alone as a top.

Layering is an important skill if you want to be seen as fashionable. Cardigans are a great piece of clothing because you can find them in all different lengths. The amount of coverage you choose is up to you because they all create a similar shape.

Leave the cardigan unbuttoned and pair it with a tank top or t-shirt, depending on how formal you want the outfit to be.

Caution with chunky turtlenecks

Turtlenecks are very flattering for many different body types. They provide plenty of coverage, are ideal for layering, and add a sophisticated level to every outfit that you include them in. You can also tuck in a turtleneck to create a sleek and elevated look.

But chunky turtlenecks can create a bulkier shape. The turtleneck itself can already bunch up due to a large amount of fabric, and it may make your neck look a lot wider than it is. If you have a shorter neck, you will want to avoid chunky turtlenecks completely.

In general, chunky and thick clothing is often seen as something older women wear, so it may become an aging item in your closet.

Caution with floral tops

Florals are beautiful and can add a perfect amount of femininity to each outfit. They also provide a touch of color, which can turn a floral top into the ideal statement piece.

But you have to be careful with floral tops since floral patterns can often be associated with grandma’s clothing. It can be tricky to be on the right side of the line between feminine and aging when it comes to floral tops.

Avoid deep plunging necklines

Although being older than 60 does not require you to cover up every part of your body, it is not recommended to show a lot of skin. Deep plunging necklines often show a lot of cleavage and skin anywhere around your chest.

As you get older, your bust will not stay as visually pleasing as it may have been before. You do not want to make your chest the centerpiece of your outfit. It is also not seen as very tasteful to wear extremely revealing clothing as an older woman.

If you have a more petite frame, plunging necklines that form a u-shape will be extremely unflattering and the fabric will end up bunching up along the neckline.

Avoid tacky sweaters

It has become more trendy to wear ugly or tacky sweaters. These are usually vintage sweaters that someone’s grandma wore in the 90s. It may look cute on women who are 20, but it is extremely aging on women over the age of 60.

Tacky sweaters are generally known and referred to as “grandma sweaters” and are something you will always want to avoid. Due to the immediate association between grandparents and old age, a tacky sweater will only make you look older than you may want to look.

These sweaters usually have patches, sequins, random objects, and even tassels attached to them. They are cluttered and unflattering for most women. If you want to dress elegantly and classy, this is a style of top you should avoid.

Avoid sheer tops

Although layering is a popular fashion trend currently, there are some types of tops that you should not add to your closet. Sheer tops are just see-through tops made with poor-quality fabric.

They are very revealing and leave absolutely nothing to the imagination. Even if you add layers to this top, it is still not very appropriate for women who are over 60. This style of top is often associated with goth style since many sheer tops have skulls or black lace incorporated into the shirt.

Even if you like to dress in darker tones, it is still wise to avoid sheer tops. Since they are so popular with the younger generations, it may make it seem obvious that you are wearing it to appear younger and fit in with a different age group.

Caution with spaghetti strapped tops

As you get older, it can be challenging to keep your body in perfect shape. Your skin will be looser, and wrinkles and other imperfections will form. These things are typically inevitable. You can use the type of top you wear to strategically conceal some of these imperfections, which will automatically make you look slightly younger than you are.

Spaghetti straps are thin strapped tank tops that show a lot of skin. Even if the top has a higher neckline, all of your shoulders, collarbone, back, and any fat that comes with those areas will be on display.

If you want more coverage, you may want to look for a tank top that has thick straps so that you have more coverage. Thick straps also provide more support and comfort, which should be an important factor to consider as a woman over 60.
