Are you searching for the best trench coats for petites? If you are 5’4″ and under, it is not easy to find the petite trench coat that fits you.
Trust me, I have been there. I am 5’2″, and I had a laundry list of requirements on the trench coat I was looking for, the length, style, fabric, color, and of course, the price. It took me many trial and error to finally find the one from Banana Republic that checked every box, but I’m telling you – that was worth all the effort. It has been over 5 years and I still love to wear it every fall and spring.

Trench coat is such a cornerstone piece in your wardrobe. Once you find the right one, it is here to stay!
I have another post about “11 Must Know Tips to Find Best Coats for Petite Women“, which talks about all types of coats and not just trenches.

TODAY, I have put together this 7 step guide to help every short girl find their ideal trench coats. It answers all the questions you have about a perfect trench from the perspective of girls under 5’4″.

All You Need to Know about Trench Coats for Petites

How long should it be to make a short girl’s proportion look the best?

First things first, there are three basic length of trench coats:
Short trench coats: They typically reach a little over the hips. There are also trench coats of cropped length, which reach above your hips.

Michael Michael Kors Petite $150

Medium trench coats: They typically are at your knee or slightly above your knee.  This is the most classic length for trench coats.

Calvin Klein Petite $129

Long trench coats: They are below the knee, and most likely reach your mid calf or even longer. They are also called maxi coats.

Should petite women only wear short coats?

That is the common myth.  I am sure you have read on various style blogs that petite women should choose the right length for their coats and jackets, and it is safe to make sure it does not go over your knees. That is all legitimate petite fashion advice.  It is obvious that when the coat is short enough, your legs seem to be longer and that will make you look taller.

Medium length trench coat is the safest, and it fits almost all height and body types.  If you can own only one trench coat and you are not a risk taker for petite fashion, then go with the medium length.

Lauren Ralph Lauren Petite Trench $129

Now, should you wear maxi coats or not?

If you have never tried long coats because of fearing they might make you look shorter, you are missing out big time.

While I agree coats above the knee or at the knee is the safest length for petite women, going longer can actually be very flattering if you master the skills.

long coats are one of wardrobe staples of petites fashion.  Let me make it clear, I am talking about very long coats, and they can be very flattering to petite women.

Have you seen the winter uniform of some Asian airlines?  The stewardesses wear black or navy coats over their skirt suit, and the coats reach their mid-calf.  From a distance, you cannot tell they are petite, because the H shape coat creates one column of color, the vertical line, which is most flattering to petite body frame.

London Fog Petite Maxi Trench $125

Now, there is certain details you need to pay attention when wearing long coats.

They of course cannot be too long that they overwhelm your body frame, and they work best with heels at least 3 inches high.  We do not recommend wearing long coats with flats or sneakers- that just does not look right and they will make you look shorter than you are, like the stylists suggested.

What fabrics are the best?

Cotton, or Not – What is Right for You?

When we talk about the fabrics trench coat, it is inevitable to talk about the history of trench coats and Thomas Burberry. Thomas Burberry invented cotton gabardine in the late 1800s. In order to create his new material, Burberry came up with a tightly woven fabric that relied heavily on worsted wool. The weave of the worsted wool was relatively smooth on one side, and had a ribbed appearance on the other side. For traditionalists, there is just one choice of trench coat fabric: 100% cotton gabardine as invented by Burberry. Tightly woven of a worsted cotton, it is both lightweight and durable.

Today, we have the choices of so many different fabrics for trench coats.

A wool trench coat will cost a lot more than a cotton one, but it is such a great investment piece for your wardrobe and will last for years to come. The fine wool material elevates the taste of your entire outfit, and will leave great impression especially in the business setting.

If you ware looking for a heavy weight trench coat, leather is the top choice to keep you out of the winter chill. Heavier and warmer than its cotton or wool fabric brethren, it is more closely related to the overcoat in terms of functionality. Leather’s ability to repel dirt and water and ease of cleaning also make them more appealing.

Petite Vegan Suede Trench Coat

If you are out shopping for petite trench coat on a budget, there is plenty of choices on the market made of faux suede and faux leather, which holds up the shape and will not cost a fortune.

Want to splurge a little and step up your wardrobe one notch? Cashmere trench coat or suede is your top choice.  Pure cashmere trench for petites are hard to find, but some high end brands like Brooks Brothers make wool-cashmere blend coats for in petite sizes.
Denim trench coat is another trend in recent years that you could try if you are looking to add variety to your closet.

What is THE color for YOU?

What Color Complements YOU?

Traditionally, trench coats were beige. Today, beige or brown are still the most mainstream color choices for petite trench coats. But, you don’t have to limit your style because of that.

In the mood of trying something different this fall and winter? Choose a color that complements your skin and eye color. Women with dark hair and complexions will look good in bright colors. Those who are fair-skinned will be complemented by pastels and light shades in outerwear.

Are you somewhere in between?
You got lots of options. The best thing to find out the most flattering coats for you is to try them on, and see how they look against your hair color, eye color and skin tone.

London Fog Petite $99

Maybe you are not yet to venture out with bold colors such as red or blue? Then you have the choices of other neutral colors such as navy, grey or black. They are the safest colors to go with other than beige or brown, because neutral colors are the easiest to style and you can pretty much feel confident they will go with anything you already own.

Talbots Petite Trench $139

Where can you find the trench coats in petite sizes and fit your budget?

Traditionally, the best places to find the most petite brands for trench coats are department stores. In recent years, most department stores have shrank their petite departments, so it almost made little sense for us petite girls to visit the local stores. It is time consuming to visit, searching racks after racks of clothing and only to be told they don’t carry your size.
Sounds familiar? All of us petite girls have experienced that at some point of our lives!
If you want to find the most petite brands in a shortest amount of time, the smart way is to go to the department stores online and shop petite sizes from there.
Why department stores?
In my own experiences, Nordstrom and Macy’s are my favorites when it comes to finding the best winter coats for petites. They have classic designers for petites like Lauren Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Michael Michael Kors, as well as emerging popular designers exclusive to Nordstrom and Macy’s like Halogen. Nordstrom and Macy’s constantly have promotion events for every major holidays, so you might be able to score a high quality designer petite trench coat at just a fraction of the cost.

How should you style it with what you have in your closet?

Once you find your favorite petite trench coat, it is just as important for you to figure out what you should wear under it and make the entire outfit look chic.  Trench coat is so versatile, you can create drastically different styles depending on what you wear under and the shoes you wear.

For instance, a slim cut cashmere or wool trench coat defines a polished look, so your best bet is to wear a well fitted sweater under it, which you can pair with skinny pants and boots. Another choice is to wear a dress under the petite trench coat, paired with heels, to complete the look.

If you purchased short or cropped trench coat, then you create many different casual looks with it.  Feel free to wear sweaters and jeans, paired with sneakers or flats.

The secret to style a petite figure is to make sure what you wear underneath will not break the continuous vertical line created by the coat. What I mean by that is if you wear a dress or skirt under the coat, make sure it is not longer than the coat. Otherwise the dress or skirt shown under the coat will make your legs look cut off and make a petite woman look even shorter.

If you are wearing pants under the trench coat, make sure the pants are long enough. Avoid wide leg pants shorter than your ankle, because they create a horizontal line and make your legs look shorter.

Understand monochromatic dressing

When styling your trench coat, it is important for petite girls to master the skills of monochromatic dressing.

For those of you not familiar with the term here is the definition of monochromatic color. According to Wiki, Monochromatic color schemes are derived from a single base hue and extended using its shades, tones and tints. Tints are achieved by adding white and shades and tones are achieved by adding a darker color, grey or black.

In fashion, monochromatic outfits are most flattering to short girls because they create a column of colors, i.e. the length much needed by short girls. If you want to master the skills of how to look taller, then monochromatic outfit is a must.  Using colors to enhance the illusion of height is a highly effective strategy, because it helps create a vertical line.

short women

To apply monochromatic dressing does not necessarily mean short women should be wearing one single color from head to toe- that would be boring to wear all the time, wouldn’t it?  It just means if the colors you wear are all from the same color scheme with less contrast, you will appear to be taller.

The trick to monochrome dressing is to keep each silhouette crisp and tailored. For petite girls, you should avoid any oversized items anyways and always go for a fitted look.

To create a monochromatic outfit based on your trench coat, you can consider wearing dark sweaters and pants under a black or navy trench coat, paired with black boots.

If your trench coat is beige or brown, then wearing a camel dress underneath would be the same color scheme. Paring that with a pair of dark brown boots would be the perfect finishing touch.

The best shoes to wear trench coat if you are short

Now that you found the trench coat for your petite height, do not forget about completing the look with the right shoes.  Tall boots, either knee high or over-the-knee are the no brainer that goes with almost any style of trench coats.

Short trenches are recommended to wear with high-heeled knee-high boots, while ankle boots should be avoided as they may visually shorten the legs. Long trenches with flat ballerinas look very romantic and fresh, though shoes with small heels may also work well with long trench coats. Platform shoes and brogues are just other alternatives to wear with trench coats.

For petite women, finding the right tall boots is not easy, because the shaft length may not fit our shorter legs.
Since I am 5’2″, I have had plenty of frustration with that! Most of the tall boots which are supposed to be knee high are too high for me and hit an awkward place on my knees.

My personal favorite is Taryn Rose. Their tall boots fit my legs just right, and I especially love their tall boots with wedges. I walk about 25 minutes one way between the train stations every day, and these boots are my secrets of walking long distance without hurting.

TARYN ROSE Erica Faux Fur Weatherproof Boot, Main, color, BLACK SUEDE

I owned one pair of wedge boots from Geox from years ago that I still wear every winter. The shaft height is just right for shorter women. They have the most feminine design while still staying comfortable for short women.

GEOX Calinda Tall Boot, Main, color, BLACK LEATHER
Geox $289

I got two pairs of over the knee boots from Nine West last year, and I literally just lived in them through out the 5 months of winter in NY. They are super comfy for commuter like myself who need to walk 20 minutes each way, every day.

7. How should you accessorize it?

While a petite trench coat itself creates a great framework and foundation for your entire outfit, you can double their oomph if you complement the look with the right accessories. The accessories can be flattering to your small frame, while functional in the colder weather at the same time.

For instance, scarves and chiffon shawls romantically tied round the neck may create an instagram worthy look among crunching leaves in the autumn.

Trench coats for petites

The key is to make sure your accessories (hats, jewelry, scarves and bags) are in scale to your size.

Does this mean the smaller, the better?

The answer is no. For instance, not all petites are skinny, if you are a heavier set petite woman, then mini size accessories will only make you look bigger.

Another important tip of accessorizing is to draw eyes above. For example, tying the scarves higher will elevate the balance point of your outfit, and make you look taller.

Are you looking for the best coats for petites? With the colder weather upon us, it is that time of the year again to think about petite outerwear.

As a petite woman myself (I am 5’2″), I totally get how hard it is to find the right winter coats for petite women.  To me, pants and coats are the two hardest things for petite women to shop for.

When it comes to petite coats, I have pretty high standards. It should be a coat you want to live in, a coat that fits you perfectly and flatters you where you need it.  Winter coats are not cheap, so it is worthwhile to spend the time to find the petite coat that will last years to come in your closet.

I always believe the best way to upgrade our fashion sense is to observe how it looks on other petite women- what works and what doesn’t. Of all the petite celebrities, 5 feet tall Russian IT girl Mira Duma has the largest coat collection I have ever seen. Therefore, I will quote some of her coats to illustrate my point.  (Photo: Getty Images)

I have made a Youtube video on this topic as well. If you want to skip the reading and just watch the video, you can scroll all the way to the bottom and find the link to the video.

1.Think of buying as an investment decision

Buying stylish and functional winter coats for petites is not cheap.  Most brands on the market could cost anywhere from 200 dollars to up to 600 dollars, depending on the designer and type of coat you are looking to buy.  The top tier designer labels in the Max Maras and Escadas of the world, or those made of luxury fabrics such as cashmere, could cost even more, often times what would be one month rent to a lot of girls. Since winter coats could be a high ticketed item, buying it should be treated like an investment decision.

Even if you are not ready to throw 500 dollars on the petite coat, you should still have the mindset of investment vs expense.  What is the difference?  The mindset of investment in a petite coat means you buy what is the best value from the long term perspective, whereas the mindset of expense will lead you to jump on the lowest price for what is trendy this season.

coats for petites

Suppose you live in a cold area and you have almost 6 months of winter (like myself who lives in the NY/NJ area), the coat you are buying will be worn at least twice a week through out the winter, that is, 50 times or more for each winter!

If you are getting a well tailored wool coat in a classy silhouette that will last you a minimum of 5 years, then that means you will get to use it minimum of 250 times before you retire it.  That implies a 500 dollar coat would cost you only 2 dollars for each time you wear it.

DKNY Petite Faux-Fur-Collar Maxi Coat
DKNY PETITE $460
Lauren Ralph Lauren Petite $210

The reality is most of us keep a good quality winter coat for well over 5 years, and sometimes up to 10 years ( I still wear a black wool coat I purchased over 10 years ago and still get compliments every winter!). I am not advocating that we should all head to Saks Fifth Avenue and order a $500 dollar coat, but you get what I am getting at.

Once you have the mindset of investing when looking for the coats for petites, you will make a wise decision and value quality over quantity.  So, before you head over to department stores/shopping malls, or before you pull out your ipad to search the online shops, take a minute to think about your budget and what price range you should be looking for the coats.

The best time to purchase coats are January every year, when all the major retailers and department stores have their largest sale event of the year for winter clothing.  If you can wait till January, you probably can get the best bang for your bucks and score some really nice finds at unbelievable prices.  Of course, there is the risk that your size might be sold out in January.

2. Take a look at your closet first

Now that you have an idea of the price range for the coats for petites, the second step is to take a look at what you already have in your closet.  What would you call the style of your wardrobe?  Are you mostly casual? Or are you more on the polished side?  Are you a flats and sneakers girl? Or you can’t live without heels?  Do you prefer to wear dresses and boots in winter? Or mostly pants and jeans?  These questions are important to ask yourself before you make a buying decision for the petite coat, because what you buy need to go with what you already have.

winter coats for petite women

I was wearing a wool coat from Banana Republic in this picture.

Since buying coats is an investment decision, you want to make sure it will be complementary to your existing items. If your style is glamorous and your winter staples are wool dresses and tall boots, then a polished wool or cashmere petite coat might be your best bet.  If you are outdoorsy and you wear flats or sneakers most of the times, then perhaps a fitted down coat will go with everything you already have.  Getting the petite coat that is consistent with your existing style will make sure your new coat fit in immediately, without you having to spend more to buy new clothes to go with the new coat!

3. The best places to shop for coats for petites.

Traditionally, the best places to find the most petite brands for winter coats are department stores. In recent years, most department stores have shrank their petite departments, so it almost made little sense for us petite girls to visit the local stores.  It is time consuming to visit, searching racks after racks of clothing and only to be told they don’t carry your size.

Why department stores?  In my own experiences, Nordstrom and Macy’s are my favorites when it comes to finding the best winter coats for petites.  They have classic designers such as Ralph Lauren, London Fog and Calvin Klein, as well as emerging popular designers like Halogen and 1901.

Nordstrom and Macy’s constantly have promotion events for every major holidays, so you might be able to score a high quality designer petite coat at just a fraction of the cost.

Another place I often check out are my favorite petite designer websites.  Tahari ASL is known for their suits, and their coats have the consistent sleek design and tailoring. Their price tags are quite reasonable!

Ann Taylor and Jcrew, without saying, are also on the top of the list. They make fine quality coats for petites and the prices won’t break your bank, especially if you wait till their winter promotion season.

Brooks Brothers is one of my favorite shops which makes premium quality winter coats in petite sizes.

4. The silhouette is the foundation of your petite coat.

Now, you know how much you are looking to spend and where to find the coats for petites. Let’s begin the search for the best petite coats for you. The fundamental concept here is silhouette.  You may have heard about this term often but not sure exactly what it means.

Coco Chanel said “Fashion is architecture.”  Therefore, like architecture, the easiest way to understand silhouette of your coat is the shape of it.  Is it A shape, H shape or cocoon shape?  Is it fluffy or lean? Now you get an idea of what I am referring to.  There are several shapes of coats that look the best on petite women.

Mira Duma (Getty Images)

The goal here should be to create the long straight line through the coat, thus a slim cut H shape always fits into the criteria.

petite coats
Mira Duma (Getty Images)

A line coat with empire waist (also known as princess cut) is another shape that flatters short girls. The reason is it elevates your waistline, and creates the illusion of height.

Mira Duma (Getty Images)

Understanding your body type will help you choose the best silhouette for the petite coats.  From my observation, wrap coats are flattering to almost any body type.  Since you can adjust the belt tight or loose, wrap coats are suitable for petite women of all sizes.  They are especially flattering for petite girls who need to create defined waistline such as apple shaped petite women and rectangle shaped petite women.  Apple shaped petite girl who is conscious about midriffs may find cocoon coat give you plenty of space in the mid section.  If you are hourglass shaped petite girl with bigger bust, a petite coat with open front will give you the extra space in the chest area.

5.  It is all about the fit.

When it comes to styling petite girls, nothing is more important than the fit.  It is even more so when it comes to coats for petites.  The reason?  Winter coats cover such a large area of your body!  If it doesn’t fit you perfectly, you will look like being worn by the coat instead of you wearing the coat.  Talking about the fit, we need to start from the shoulders.  Here let us look at the highest standard of fitting, which comes from suits, but it applies to coats as well.

best coats for petites

A well fitted shoulder lies flat.  The seam on the top of the shoulder should be the same length as the bone under it, and should meet the sleeve on the coat right where your arm meets your shoulder.  If the seam that connects the sleeve to the jacket is hiked up along your shoulder bone, or dangling down on your upper bisep, you will see the ripple effects that create lumps or wrinkles on the sleeves and the top of the jacket.  Now the caveat here is the shoulder fitting does not necessarily apply to every petite coat, e.g. some cocoon coats have different seam than traditional tailored coats so it is hard to gauge with this principal.  However, majority of the coats should follow this guideline.

6. The length is critical for short women when choosing the right coats for petites

Now, the most debated topic when it comes to choosing the coats for petites.  What is the ideal length for petite women?  The commonly accepted length is short length. However, if you are ditching long coats because of that, you are missing out big time.

petite style

While I agree coats above the knee or at the knee is the safest length for petite women, going longer can actually be very flattering if you master the skills.

7. Learn how to play with proportion.

coats for petites celebrity style
Mira Duma (Getty Images)

Have you heard of the Golden Mean Ratio? Ancient Greeks discovered this ratio that appears in nature about what human eyes find most aesthetically pleasing. Specifically, 1/3 to 2/3 ratio is the most aesthetically pleasing division of space to our eyes.  You have seen it applied in mathematics, architecture and art.  Ever wonder how you could apply this to petite fashion? It is known as the “rule of thirds”, a ratio if you follow will instantly change the proportion of your body and take your outfit to the next level.

Now let’s look at how you can make your coat more flattering using this concept.  In one word, your coat should create the proportion of thirds in stead of halves or quarters in your body.  That means if you wear a coat that is about knee length, you can wear pants to create the 2/3 to 1/3 ratio.  If you decide to wear a dress under your coat, then length of the dress should not be longer than the coat, in order to achieve the ratio of thirds.

On the other hand, if you wear a shorter peacoat or cropped length coat, which normally reaches above or just under your hips, then wearing skinny jeans or pants with high heels or tall boots of the same color to extend your bottom half can help create the 1/3 to 2/3 ratio.

8. Choosing the right fabrics if you want your petite coat to be a real investment.

Fabrics have a big impact on the overall look of an outfit.  If fabrics are cheap and wrinkled, they will downgrade people’s impression on you.  This especially important with coats for petites. When it comes to formal wear for the office or client meetings, always choose heavy weight natural fabrics such as wool or cashmere, especially in the winter times.  It is true petite coats made of expensive material will cost a lot more.

Talbots Petite $329
Talbots Petite $299

But, remember the maths I did for you in the beginning?  Consider it an investment for the long term and you will realize investing in a winter coat made from fine merino wool is worth every penny.  It will make your entire outfit look more expensive, thus give more presence and authority to short girls.  Get them when they are on sale at end of the season.  The classic style never really changes much over time anyway

9. The best color for petite coats?

coats for petites celebrity style
Mira Duma (5′) Getty Images

When you open your winter closet, do you see mostly grey, black and beige?  You are not alone.  Most of us do too.  Why? Probably because neutral colors are the safest and easiest to style.

However, you should also realize that dark colors shrinks and bright colors adds presence. If you are used to a petite fashion wardrobe full of blacks and greys, like most of us in urban metropolitan areas do, venture out and add some bright colors and you will be surprised how flattering they are on petite body frame.

The secret is to use bright colors to volume and thus complement your petite frame.  Classic winter coats for petites can be more than just beige and black.  You can go with wine or even lighter pink or baby blue, which will still be in style season after season.

10. What you wear underneath matters a lot.

So, you have found the favorite coats for petites.  What now?  It is just as important for you to figure out what you should wear under it and make the entire outfit look chic.  Winter coat sets the foundation of the style for your entire outfit.  For instance, a slim cut cashmere or wool coat defines a polished look, so your best bet is to wear a well fitted sweater under it, which you can pair with skinny pants and boots.

Another choice is to wear a dress under the coat, paired with heels, to complete the look.  If you purchased a puffer or down coat, then you have many options to create a warm and casual look.  Feel free to wear sweaters and jeans, paired with sneakers or snow boots.

If you are wearing pants under the petite coat, make sure the pants are long enough.  Avoid wide leg pants shorter than your ankle, because they create a horizontal line and make your legs look shorter.

11. Complete the look with the right shoes.

Now that you have an idea of what coats for petites you should buy for this fall and winter, do not forget about completing the look with the right shoes.  Tall boots, either knee high or over-the-knee are the no brainer that goes with almost any style of coats.

For petite women, finding the right tall boots is not easy, because the shaft length may not fit our shorter legs.  Since I am 5’2″, I have had plenty of frustration with that! Most of the tall boots which are supposed to be knee high are too high for me and hit an awkward place on my knees.  After years of trying, returning and buying, I have summarized my experiences and tips in ” Boots for Short Legs: 5 Tips Every Petite Girl should Know” as well as “Boots for Petites: Top 5 Brands and Where to Find them”.

Tall boots can make a down coat less bulky, and make a tailored coat more vibrant and polished.  They are also the best choices to improve your proportion when you are wearing winter coats, because they almost look at extension of your legs.

Wearing white after Labor Day is the never ending debate in America. Have you heard of this many times and are wonder why is wearing white after labor day bad?

Well, this “no white after Labor Day” rule first came into the American fashion scene at the turn of the 20th century and it was used by the New England elitists, according to the Emily Post Institute.   Why? Back in the days it was difficult to tell the difference between old money and new money, respectable families and those who only had vulgar new money, in order to tell who was acceptable and who wasn’t, the women who weren’t already “in” felt it necessary to create dozens of fashion rules that everyone in the know had to follow.

100 years later, this rule has apparently filtered into American culture at large, and everyone has heard about it from fashion magazine or stylist at some point as part of fashion etiquette .

So, here we are, after Labor Day and transitioning into fall, the sun is still bright and shinning and we feel reluctant to wave goodbye to the warm weather.  Are you are asking yourself “should I wear white after Labor Day or not?”

You are not alone.  Every year around Labor Day, the fashion debate begins around this time.

The answer is absolutely yes! All fashion rules can be broken, and this one is not an exception either.

In fact, if you are a stylish petite girl, wearing white is advisable year round, in the sense it adds presence to your outfit.

So, the question is not really whether you should wear white after Labor Day, instead, it really is how to wear it.

1. Wear white with the fall staples

The key is to be mindful with what you wear with white.  If you mix white items with fall staples such as jean jacket, suede boots, colorful scarf, or leopard print belt, then you can make the most use of your summer items and wear them all the way through the winter.  It will be fun to play mixing and match in your wardrobe.

For instance, most of us have a favorite little white dress (LWD) which we do not want to put away after Labor Day.  If you are petite, mixing a white skater dress with a cropped jean jacket will elongate your legs, and make you look much taller. Additionally, be strategic about the size of your accessory and where you want the accessory to be.  For petite girls, wearing a shorter scarf will draw people’s attention upwards to your face, and visually is more flattering.

2 It is less about the color and more about the fabrics.

When we transition into the fall, the flowy and airy fabrics naturally are less suitable for the weather change and the temperature drop.  Instead, you would probably prefer fabrics with a little bit of texture or weight, such as wool sweater or cashmere.

A quality  piece in white wool or cashmere can be worn all autumn and winter and will always be in style. Cable knit sweater or cashmere with honeycomb details are winter classics, which add the perfect amount of weight to winter white.  A white cable knit sweater never goes out of style.  It is so versatile you can easily pair it with pants or skirt and look effortless chic while staying warm.

3 Wear slightly different shades of white.

Compared with the bright and summerly “white” white which looks cool (temperature wise) and breezy, you may want to look into a warmer shade of white such as cream, ivory or off white.

4. Invest in a white outerwear

A classic way to wear white after Labor Day is to invest in a high quality white jacket or white coat.

A white tweed jacket is the all time favorite of fashionistas. It will be your best friend in the transitioning weather, and probably a great investment for this fall.  You can layer it on top of your light weight dress for a date night, or wear it to an office meeting.

A white parka or down coat in the winter is always chic and will keep you warm.

Calvin Klein Petite $142

For petite girls, wearing white outerwear in winter will not only make you look chic, but also be flattering to your petite frame, as it adds presence.

Fourthly, what color you match with white after Labor Day can really make a big difference with your outfit.

White is the foundation of everything, so it naturally goes with pretty much everything, especially blue, red and black.  If you want a more dramatic look, paring white with black is the most classic and never goes wrong in any occasion.  Wearing navy with white is inherently sleek and sophisticated, and is effortless chic, especially at work occasions.

Another benefit of paring white with darker shades is to balance the bulkiness.  Darker color have the slimming effect and it works wonderfully well with white in the winter.

If you want to have a little fun with colors, try to pair it with red or plaid.  Wearing white with red will not only make you stand out in the black and grey crowd in winter times, it also naturally radiates warmth and energy.

Plaid is another winter classic, and wearing white with plaid is timeless and never goes out of style.

Finally, using white accessories strategically can elevate your outfit in the fall and winter.

Wearing white shoes could still be appropriate, depending on the occasion, but a pair of white lacy or satin pumps is probably less practical than a pair of white leather stiletto or cream color boots.  A winter classic is a fluffy white cashmere scarf or a white sweater hat, and most of us cannot resist the warmth and cuteness.

If you are wondering what is the best jeans for apple shape, you have come to the right place. I am 5’2″, with a typical apple body shape. It has never been easy for me to find the right jeans for apple shape, and of course being petite (i.e. shorter legs) also doubled the challenge.

I have another post that explains what is a typical apple body type and how you should style, and also a different post that talks about the best dresses for apple body type. In this post, I will focus on the jeans for apple shaped women.

Why jeans for apple shape is harder to find

Of the 5 body types, apple body shape is most prone to a heavier midsection, thus women with apple body type are commonly concerned about hiding muffin top. If you are a typical apple shape, then chances are you are likely to have a bigger stomach, while your legs are quite skinny.

That is the case with me (even though you can’t see it from far, like in this picture).

A typical apple body type is very likely to have slender legs, but bigger waistline. That means it is just so much harder to find jeans for apple shape that can hide muffin top while not looking too loose on the legs!

Of course apple shaped women are not the only ones that could have the concern about their midsections.  There’s many reasons why you might not want others to notice your belly. Perhaps you never lost that stubborn baby fat after you gave birth, or you picked up a few extra pounds because of stress in life that led to hormone fluctuations.

Regardless of the reasons, I want to go over with you the tips I have learned over the years of finding the best jeans for apple shape that will fit you comfortably and stylishly.

Then, I will give you a round up of the 5 best jeans brands for apple shape, based on the feedback of our readers.

5 Tips to find the best jeans for apple shape

1. Wear pull on jeans with elastic waistband

This is the number one tip I want to share with you! Traditionally jeans were made with front zippers, and pull on jeans is  newer trend. Why does pull on jeans make s difference for apple shaped women (or anyone with muffin top)?

The reason is front zipper adds bulk to your mid section, and makes it more noticeable.  On the other hand, pull on jeans generally have a side panel with stomach flattening effect for your midriff.

Later on in the round up for best jeans for big tummy, you will notice the top brands all embrace this concept of tummy control panel.

NYDJ Petite $99
LIVERPOOL High Rise Stretch Denim Ankle Leggings, Main, color, CORONADO MID
Liverpool petite $89
EILEEN FISHER Stretch Denim Leggings, Main, color, UTILITY BLUE

2. No button fly jeans

Okay, the button fly jeans are absolutely adorable and they are just so on trend! They are my personal favorite! However, I can only wear them when I am really skinny and when my  midriff is not very obvious.  As soon as I gained a few pounds, I will have to stop wearing them, because the front buttons just make my stomach so much more obvious!

I’m not saying you have to stay away from the button fly jeans completely, but they are not the most flattering if your goal is to hide the muffin top.

3. Choose the size best accommodating  your waistline

This one is a very common mistake I see people make- myself included.

Since I’m a typical apple shape, my legs are slender but my waistline is not. For most of the tops, a size XS to S works perfect for me.  However, when it comes to jeans, I should size up because of my waist, which I did not realize for a very long time.  The mistake I made in the past is that I decided my jeans size based on my top size, ignoring the fact that my waistline needs a bigger size. Therefore, the jeans I got used to be too tight for my waist, which makes my mid section look even more obvious!

If you are like me, choose the correct jeans size based on your waist instead of elsewhere. What you should keep in mind is if your jeans size is too small, they would only make your belly look more noticeable!

Photo: Pexel.com

If you are in between sizes, go one size up. Here is the deal, you’d rather your jeans look looser in the waist than too tight. If it looks looser, it gives the impression that your waist is smaller than the pants. On the other hand, if it looks like your belly is overflowing under that jeans- it simply makes your waistline even worse.

4. High rise is your best friend

High rise jeans  is the best choice for petite women in general, because they extend you vertically and make your legs look longer. They are especially great for women looking for jeans for big stomach, since they would not cut your belly in half thus they provide the most coverage and support for your belly.

How high should you go? It is really hard for me to give you a specific number, because it really depends on your rise. If you are not familiar with the concept of rise, read my other post to understand if you are long rise/short leg or short rise/long leg body type.

inseam length
Pull on jeans from Petite Dresing

You should choose the rise that you feel most comfortable about, but of course no need to go to the extreme (I.e. you don’t want to feel like it’s reaching your rib cage…)

5. Wear flare leg

Flare leg is one of the best jeans for women with bigger midsection, because it balances out your bottom half. Plus, flare leg jeans are the most flattering style for petites- they instantly make your legs look so much longer!

6. Go with black or dark wash jeans

It is  obvious to most women blank is the shrinking color, thus black jeans makes your bottom half look smaller.

Did you know that dark washed jeans have the same effect?

Now you have another excellent choice besides black jeans.

7. Wear bright top with dark jeans

Here’s a bonus tip most stylists wouldn’t tell you- when you wear bright color top and pair it with black jeans or dark washed jeans, they actually have more slimming effect than if you were to wear black top with black jeans.

The reason is the contrast created by the top and the bottom!

petite pull on jeans

8. Careful with tucking

When you tuck your top under the jeans, you are immediately drawing attention to your belly! Obviously, that is what you want to avoid!

9. Avoid skinny belt

Are you surprised by this one?

It make sound like skinny belt is supposed to make you skinny, right? But it is the opposite! If you are looking for jeans that flatters big tummy, you should stay away from wear a skinny belt over the jeans.

In this picture, the model is an hourglass shape, i.e. her waist is significantly smaller than the hips. That is not the case with apple shape. If you and I wear the skinny belt,, the contrast of the skinny belt and the heavy mid section makes things so much worse.

Do you have an apple body type and are you wondering what are the best dresses for apple shape? This is the right place for you.

First, I am 5’2″, and an apple body type myself. Being shorter makes it even harder to find dresses for apple body shape. Over the years, I have put a lot of effort trying to figure out where to buy clothes for apple shape. The regular size clothing most likely will not fit, and that limits the choices to petite department. Through trial and error (believe me, I have made a ton of mistakes), I finally have come up with these tips to share with other apple shaped women.

The first step of dressing for an apple body type is to understand your strengths and weaknesses. I have another article dedicated to generally how you should dress as an apple shaped woman, and in this post I will focus on the best dresses for apple body type.

So, before we get into the tricks and hacks, let’s look at our own strengths and weaknesses.

What is an apple body shape

I believe a great way to learn how to dress better is to observe the celebrities that have the same body type, and see what works and doesn’t work on them. The famous celebs with apple body shape include Eva Longoria (5’2″), Jessica Simpson (5’3″) and Catherine Zeta Jones (5’7″).

Strengths of apple body type

If you have a typical apple shaped body, you probably have got lots of compliments on the following:

  • Round and full bust
  • Round shaped and full hips
  • Slender legs
  • Firm/toned arms

How many of these nice features do you have? As an apple shape, you may have noticed your arms and legs are naturally slender. Did you feel like they remain firm and tight, even without much exercise? I feel the same way!

Now, your busts and hips are definitely your assets too! Most apple shaped women have round shaped breasts and full hips. I presume you must have got a ton of compliments for your curves, am I right?

In fact, apple shape can be similar to an hourglass figure in terms of the breasts and hips, with very noticeable feminine curves. Because of that, some apple shaped women, who are skinny, can sometimes give the impression of hourglass shape.

apple shaped actresses
Eva Longoria, 5’2″ (Getty Images)

However, when apple body shape gains weight, that is when you know they are apple body type! Because, she carries most of her weight in her belly area, but she arms and legs can still remain skinny.

Is that you? I know I am definitely that way!

That leads to our next topic- the weaknesses of apple body type.

Weaknesses of apple body type

You do not have a defined waistline. Did you notice your waistline has the same width as or is wider than your shoulders and hips? Personally, even when I am skinny overall, my waistline does not look defined. If I ever put on any weight, I will see them on my belly right away!

Jessica Simpson, Getty Images

Here is some other common features shared by many petite women with apple shape, which are not necessarily weaknesses and could be viewed as neutral (depending on how you style yourself)

  • You have round and sloping shoulders that align nicely with the hips.
  • You might be short waisted

Now that you know very clearly your strengths and weaknesses, it is time to find the best dresses for apple shape that accentuate your assets and camouflage your weaknesses!

Ideally, the outfit for apple body shape should:

  • Highlight your nice arms and legs
  • Draw attention to your round breasts and nice butt
  • In the meantime, it should distract away from your waistline or form the illusion of a defined waistline.

Best Dresses for Apple Shape

Through years of effort looking for the best outfits for apple body shape, I have found these silhouettes and design details do the best job to hide my belly and give the illusion of a slender waist. Let’s dive right in!

1. A line dresses

This is the most versatile silhouette that flatters all body shape universally. For apple shaped body, it effortless hide your stomach because the skirt naturally flare out under your stomach.

Bell Sleeve Fit & Flare Dress, Main, color, BLACK/ IVORY

2.Smocked waist dresses

Normally dresses with smocked waist band have a top that is fitted but not too tight, and the skirt part is not loose. The smocked waist forms a contrast with the top and skirt, thus creating the illusion of a waistline.

Alfani Petite $35
Corinne Polka Dot Dress, Main, color, MAUVE
Gal Meets Glam Petite $179

3.Ruched waist dresses

These worked wonders on me, because the ruched waist have an amazing slimming effect. The designer I loved the most is Nicole Miller, and ruched dresses are her signature design.

Jessica Howard Petite $78

4. Tiered dresses

This type of dresses looks like they have a separate top and bottom, but they are actually one piece. The benefit of wearing them is it will look like you have a waist. Importantly, look out for those with the same color from top to bottom, because that will have elongating effect for short girls.

Hacienda Convertible Gown, Main, color, STEEL BLUE
Show Me Your Mumu $170
Style & Co Petite $19

5. Color block dresses with light top and dark bottom

This is self explanatory why it would flatter apple shaped body which is in great need of shrinking the mid section.

Calvin Klein Metallic Colorblocked Sheath Dress
Calvin Klein $49
Tommy Hilfiger Piqué Colorblocked Dress
Tommy Hilfiger $109

Now that we talked about the most flatting dresses for apple shaped women. I want to mention a few other tips.

Should apple shaped women wear a belt?

Since apple body shape does not have a defined waistline, it sounds like tying a belt will easily fix that. I have read famous stylists’ advice like that, but does that really work?

My honest view is in most case that can actually make things worse, especially if you have an apple shaped body on the heavies side.

I think whoever is suggesting tying a belt as an easy fix for apple body type is probably not an apple herself. Here is why.

If you use a belt, it immediately draws all the attention to your mid section. That is exactly the OPPOSITE of what you want to do.

If you really want to use a belt, make sure the belt is the SAME color as the dress,or the same color scheme but a shade or two darker.

Laguna Crepe Belted Dress, Main, color, INDIGO
Vince Camuto Petite
Ditania Check Ponte Knit Belted Dress, Main, color, KLIEN BLUE FANTASY
Boss Petite $545

Should you wear loose dresses?

Now, here is another popular myth. Since apple shape body tend to have extra weight around the stomach, it seems like wearing a loose outfit will hide that, right?

The issue with loose dress is that it will seem obvious you are are trying to conceal something. Plus, if you are petite, a shapeless dress normally makes you look worse, because your small frame could look totally swamped.

Instead, wear a dress that is fitted but just make sure it is not too tight, especially not tight around your stomach area.

Shift dresses are normally a great choice for apple shaped women, because they are tailored yet they are not body con.

Stripe Sleeveless Shift Sweater Dress, Main, color, NAVY
Eliza J petite $98
Short Sleeve Ruffle Hem Dress, Main, color, BLUE FLORAL
Halogen petite $69

If you are searching for the difference between short vs petite jeans, I presume you are on the shorter side.  It is never easy to find the right jeans, when you are shorter than average. I am 5’2”, and I can certainly attest to that.  Compared with taller girls, we have far less choices of clothing for short women.  That is why I have put together this article to help you understand all the options out there so that you can make the best decision for yourself when it comes to choosing the right jeans for petite women.

short vs petite jeans

Before we get into the details of short vs petite jeans, I will first go over with you the concept of petite. Then I will walk you through the difference of petite jeans vs short jeans. Finally, we will take a look together whether one is better than the other.

I have another article that talks about the Top 5 Jeans for Petite Women with Short Legs, which gives you our recommendation of what works best on petites.

What is petite

Petite is a constantly quoted word, but not everyone is referring to the same thing.  Many people use it to refer to women who are skinny.  The petite concept we are talking about is different than that.

In clothing industry, petite is referring to a size range for women under 5’4. In comparison, regular size clothing are made for women between 5’5” and 5’8”. In recent years, some brands also start to make clothing for the tall sizes for women over 5’8”. (I have separate posts talking about the definition of petite and how petite sizes are different than regular sizes, if you are interested in knowing more about the topic).

Bottom line is petite is only talking about your height, and not talking about your weight.  For instance, someone could very well be on the heavy side, but she still belongs to the petite size range as long as she is under 5’4”. For example, singer Kelly Clarkson is 5’3″. Even though she is not a skinny woman, she is still a petite girl.

Petite plus size celebrities
Kelly Clarkson, 5’3″ (Getty Images)

Now, 5’4” is not a universal standard. Depending on the closing brands, some use 5’3 and others could use 5’5” as the cut- off for petite sizes.  If you happen to be 5’4”, chances are you might find some regular size jeans fit you just fine.  However, if you are 5’2”, most likely you will need petite size jeans if you want to avoid taking them to the tailor.

How are petite jeans different than short jeans

Now that you understand what petite size means, you are well informed for the next concept of petite vs short jeans.

Since petite size clothing is made for women under 5’4”, they are adjusted for the body characters of shorter women. When it comes to jeans, there are three main differences.

First, the most noticeable difference is that petite jeans have shorter inseam. You are probably already familiar with this, because that is what most of us is looking for when we shop at petite clothing department. That is, we want to be able to wear them without having to chopping them off at the tailor’s!

best brands for petite women

Second, a less known but still important difference of petite jeans is that their rise is adjusted to fit shorter women.

If you are not familiar with the concept of rise, I have another post dedicated to what is rise and how it makes a difference with your jeans.

In a nutshell, rise is the distance between the crotch and the waist. Petite jeans tend to have shorter rise  because petite women presumably are shorter.

Last but not the least, for certain styles of jeans such as flare leg, the knee cap position could also be slightly different in petite jeans to fit shorter women.

petite flare jeans
Petite Dressing $75
petite flare jeans
Topshop Petite $75

Now you understand how petite jeans are made to suit shorter women, let’s take a look at short jeans.

Short jeans, as suggested by the name, is shorter in inseam.  Since length is the primary concern for most of us, short jeans can be another good option for petite women.

The difference between short vs petite jeans is that short jeans are similar to regular size jeans in other measurements such as the rise and the knee cap position.

That leads to our next topic. Is short size not as good as petite jeans when it comes to the fit for petite women? In other words, should you always go with petite jeans vs short jeans?

Short vs petite jeans: which is better for you?

If you are looking for a simple answer of which you should go with, petite jeans or short jeans, it is easy to conclude that since petite jeans are designed with petite women in mind, they are supposed to fit you better.

However, here is a big “but” I will tell you the next. The answer to this question can vary by individuals, because it really depends on your specific body shape and measurements.

We mentioned earlier that petite jeans are made with the assumption of petites having  shorter rise as well as shorter legs.  However, since human body can have so many variations, we can hardly generalize like that.

Some petites may have longer rise than average petites, so what they really need is just jeans with shorter inseam. In that case, short jeans could end up fitting you perfectly.

If you don’t really know if you are the long rise/short leg or the short rise/long leg body type, you can read my other blog post for the details.

I  fall into the category of short rise and long legs, so for me short jeans work just as well as the petite jeans.

inseam length

Another scenario is that the style of jeans could also make a difference. If you are looking for flare leg jeans, then petite jeans might be the better option because the knee cap is adjusted for petites. On the other hand, if you are looking for skinny jeans, straight leg jeans or leggings, then you would hardly notice the difference of knee cap position.

The conclusion

Petite Jeans or short jeans could both work out for petite women.  You should not rule out one vs the other.

Now that you have all the information you need to understand how short jeans is different than petite Jeans, it is up to you to try on both, and make the best decision on what suits your body type the best.

Finding that perfect pair of jeans is never easy, especially if you are looking for jeans for big thighs!  If you are a fan of Sex and the City, you might recall the scene where Charlotte told Carrie her concern about her thighs.

Charlotte: I hate my thighs!

Carrie: The problem is not in your thighs. Sweetie, the problem is your head!

In real life, Kristin Davis ,who played Charlotte, is a typical pear shape, i.e. with prominent thighs and wider hips.

Kristin Davis, 5’6″, Getty Images

I fully agree with Carrie that sometimes we all tend to be unnecessarily obsessed over what we might view as an imperfection about our body, even though they are barely noticeable by others.

On the other hand, it is totally normal that we all have certain parts about our body that we wish to conceal or make less obvious.

Ideally, the right pair of denim should make your thighs look slimmer, and if you are petite, they should also make your legs look longer.

I believe the best way to understand what works and what doesn’t is to look at some real life examples, therefore, I will quote some pictures of petite celebs who happen to have the pear body type and bigger thighs. Kim Kardashian (5’3″), Rachael Bilson (5’2″), Shakira (5’2″), and Megan Fox (5’4″) are the most famous petite pear shapes.

Of course pear shape is not the only body type who may have prominent thighs. Perhaps you are a plus size women, or you could have a really athletic body type with prominent thighs.

If you are a woman with bigger thighs, you might have been frustrated that jeans that fit you elsewhere always end up being too tight for your thighs. Meanwhile, if the jeans accommodate your thicker thighs, they tend to gap on your waist.

In this article, we will take a look at how to find that perfect pair of jeans that address all of the above and make you look and feel like a million bucks ! I will also do a round up of the best jeans brands for women with big thighs, based on the feedback of our readers.

Look for dark wash jeans

You probably already know that black is the most slimming color.  The best jeans for thick thighs should have a slimming effect on the legs.  That doesn’t mean women with big thighs should only wear black jeans. Did you know dark wash can do the same to flatter your thick thighs?

pear shape
Kim Kardashian (photo: Getty Images)

Here is a bonus tip: when you pair dark washed jeans with a brighter top, the sliming result doubles! It works even better than if you are wearing darker colors from top to bottom.

The reason is bright color forms the sharp contrast with the dark jeans, and draws attention to your top, which totally distracts people’s attention from your big thighs!

The fade matters

We all know jeans come in different colors and fading. Did you know that choosing the right fade can impact how your thighs look?

The right jeans for big thighs should have fading in the center of the leg, which will make your legs look thinner and your thighs looks less thick.  If you have thicker thighs and short legs, fading on the center of leg can also make your legs look longer. This pair on Kim does the perfect job!

jeans for big thighs

If fading of the jeans is right on the thigh area, that will bring all the attention to your big thigh, which is the opposite of what you want!

Stretch fabrics make the best jeans for big thighs

If your body type is thick thighs but slender everywhere else, then you might be constantly struggling with finding the jeans for big thighs that will not be too loose in the waist area.  If that is you, one possible solution is to look for jean made of stretchy materials.

Look for jean blends that include lycra, elastane, polyurethane, or spandex.

Meanwhile, jeans with contour waistband will keep the jeans from creating a gap between your back and the waistband of your jeans.

Wear the right style

Since jeans have many different leg styles, it is critical that you choose the most flattering jeans style for big thighs.  Let’s go over each one and see what works best for women with thick thighs

Boot leg jeans

Bootcut jeans are stylish and universally flattering to women of all body types.

First, what is boot cut?

This jean style is straight through the thigh and kicks out just below the knee to create a gently widened hem (typically about an inch wider than the knee).

Since they are not as tight as skinny jeans under the knee area, they draw less attention to your legs and make your thighs less prominent.

Flare leg

This style is heaven sent jeans for women with big thighs, particularly if you have thick thighs and short legs! Many women with bigger thighs have the pear body type, which is bottom heavy. The flare leg balance out your wider hips and thigh areas perfectly. Flare leg also has the magic effect of elongating your legs!

Wide leg

Does it sound counter intuitive to you that wide leg could be a good option of jeans for thick thighs? The reason is because wide leg is roomy in the thigh area, this style will make your thighs look less prominent, especially if you wear dark wash.

The key to wear wide leg jeans for women with big thighs and short legs is to make sure you pair it with a well tailored top. Since the wide leg adds volume to your bottom half, it is important to balance it out with a fitted blouse or tank top to avoid looking swamped in fabrics.

Straight leg jean

This is the most classic jeans style that works great on women with big thighs.  You can find them at almost all denim brands and they go with everything in your wardrobe.

Skinny jeans or not?

Would skinny jeans look good on women with big thighs?  This a constant debate! While some may argue skinny jeans are too tight for bigger thighed women, others might see them as trendy and cool.

In my view, you don’t have to ditch the skinny jeans trend just because you are concerned about big thighs.  If you follow the earlier advice in this article to pick out a pair of dark washed skinny made from thicker and stretcher fabrics, you can totally rock the look! In fact, Kim Kardashian’s signature look is skinny jeans!

short girls
Kim Kardashian (5’3″) Getty Images

There is one hack for skinny jeans that works particularly well for women with big thighs, that is, the length of the top. I will talk about that next.

Choose the right length for your top

Did you know the length if your top could totally change the look of your thighs? If you don’t want to draw all the attention to your thighs, avoid tops that ends right on your thighs.  Instead, wear a longer top that falls below your thigh area, which will totally direct attention away from your big thighs.

Whatever denim style you are wearing, make sure to choose a top with the flattering length!

If you’ve felt stuck when it comes to finding the best dresses for women over 40, you’re in the right place. Let’s set the record straight: you can look stylish at any age. Yes, even when you’re over 40!

This can be a special time in your life for a woman, because it’s a new phase of life. While there are certain clothes that begin to air on the side of not being appropriate once you’re over 40, there are a lot more options available than you may realize.

With the warm weather upon us, it’s the season of dresses. Thus I wanted to give you some tried and true style tips to help you find the best dresses if you are over 40. These tips are going to help you look at dresses in a whole new light and give you some great ideas to consider, as you shop for your next dress to add to your wardrobe.

Ready? Let’s get started…

1. Focus Less on Trends, More on Classics

As a woman over 40, one of the key style tips to keep in mind is to begin paying more attention to classics instead of trends. Wearing more classics and wardrobe staples will often make you look younger (major win at any age, right?) and by this time in your life you’re probably exhausted trying to chase all the latest trends season after season.

I’m not saying that you can’t wear or embrace ANY trends. I’m simply suggesting to begin to do so sparingly. When we wear a lot of trends over 40, it could sometimes give us the dreaded ‘trying too hard’ look.

When you are thinking about the best dresses for women over 40, start to think more about the classic dress styles for this reason. These types of dresses will be age appropriate. And, as an added bonus, you will get a lot more years and wear out of them because they are classic.

Great dress silhouettes to consider for women over 40 are shift, fit & flare, etc. Take it a step further and make sure you are choosing dresses in classic colors to further enhance the age appropriate aspect.

I’ll get into the classic element a bit more later on…keep reading!

2. Lower the Length a Bit

Length plays a big role in dresses regardless of your age, especially if you’re a petite woman over 40. Chances are you’ve been told to select dresses that are shorter in length, mini length as an example. While shorter dresses silhouettes are flattering when you are a petite woman, once you’re over 40, too short can be, well…too short. Going back to the age appropriateness, it’s the time in your life to make a slight adjustment to the length of the dresses you are selecting to wear.

dresses for women after 40
Reese Witherspoon (born 1976), Getty Images

Instead of going super short with your dresses, simply bring the length down a tad. This doesn’t mean you should (or have) to wear only maxi length dresses. Instead, consider dresses that rest just above the knee. This length is still incredibly figure flattering for a petite woman, but will be more age appropriate for a woman over 40. Essentially accommodating both aspects of YOU.

So in general, just above the knee or a tad shorter is going to be the best dress length for women over 40. Although don’t be afraid of midi length, too! And yes, petites, you can rock a midi length dress – we recently shared some of our tips to finding the best midi dresses when you’re petite make sure you check it out.

3. Dress According to Your Body Shape

Truthfully, dressing for your body shape is a skill to master regardless of your age. Once you’re a woman over 40, it becomes even more essential that you are dressing to flatter your body shape.

It’s not uncommon to experience a difference in your body shape at this point in your life, which could result from many different factors. Your hormone and metabolism level could start to change after turning 40. Or, perhaps you had a (another) baby, and losing weight just becomes a lot harder than when you were in 20s or early 30s. If you are experiencing a lot of stress, that could also cause weight fluctuation. Bottom line is, if you start to notice your old dresses no longer fit you, or certain places of the clothes fit too tight, that is all normal at this stage of your life.

When that happens, a lot of women tend to lean towards dresses that have little to no shape. Although shapeless dresses seem to be the short cut to hide your weight gain, they don’t flatter your body shape at all. If you are petite, loosely fitted dresses are even worse for you, because they could make you look even shorter.

The right way to handle this is to really understand your body type and find dresses that suit your exact situations. For example, apple body shape tend to accumulate weight on their stomach, whereas pear body shape tend to gain weight on their lower half, i.e. thighs and butt. Petite Dressing blog has articles dedicated to each and every body type on how to dress to camouflage your weaknesses and accentuate your assets. If you haven’t read them already, you should go ahead and check it out.

4. Best Silhouettes of Dresses for Women over 40

Since I suggested that you stick with classic dress silhouettes for women over 40, I’m going to break down a couple of the most common classic silhouettes and the body shapes they best flatter to help you navigate this.

Fit & Flare

This silhouette is perfect to balance a large top half and/or bust. If you’re an inverted triangle body shape, fit and flare is a great option for you.

Fit & flare is also a great option for a woman over 40 who doesn’t have a naturally defined waist, such as apple body shape or rectangle body type. Because of the shape of this dress, it creates and/or enhances a waistline.

Sheath

Another great classic dress silhouette for women over 40, particularly a woman who has an hourglass body shape or rectangle body shape. Because sheath dresses are form fitting but not too tight, they flatter a body shape that has natural balance to it.

Shift

The shift dress isn’t form fitting but also isn’t overly loose in fit. Because of the style fit of the shift dress, it’s best when worn on a woman who has a rectangle body shape, or has a pear body shape.

The flow of the dress creates the illusion of curves in a flattering manner for a woman with a rectangle body shape, which is straight up and down. Typically shift dresses have sleeves and details at the top of the dress, which creates balance for a pear body shape.

5 Choose Colors and Prints Wisely

As much as I want you to have fun with the clothes that you’re wearing as a woman over 40, there are some color/print elements to take into consideration. I mentioned above that it’s best to focus on classics when choosing the best dresses for women over 40, colors and prints are included in this.

Avoid Overpowering Colors

The reason behind this is because when you have a dress that is in a color and/or print that is very bold and overpowering, it tends to be more of a trend piece. Not that you can’t ever wear a trend again, it tends to make us look older than we are when something overpowers us with color and/or print.

If you want something safe or something that ALWAYS works, I recommend sticking to the basic colors like black, white, navy…you can even go with a dark purple or red. You CAN definitely wear colors, just make sure they aren’t super bold colors (think neon), or very busy prints (but there is one exception which I will talk about next), etc.

Introduce Animal Prints

The exception here is animal prints. The leopards or snake prints themselves do not really define any age. That might explain why you see them worn by 20 something as well as 50 something. However, what I noticed is that our age gives them different looks.

If a 20 year old wears animal prints, we think sexy and wild. If a 40 something wears it, then she looks sensual and sophisticated. If you were hesitant in your 20s and 30s about trying animal prints, then 40s is the perfect time to try this look! There is something about the maturity of women that brings out the bold and authoritative side of the animal prints.

6 Simplistic Accessories are Best

Accessorizing is where you complete the look of your dress, whether you’re a woman over 40 or not. We’ve all heard accessories can make or break an outfit and that rule definitely applies when you are a woman over 40. You may have spent your previous years loading up and layering a ton of different accessories together when getting dressed. It’s great to do when you’re in your teens and 20’s but now that you are a woman over 40 it’s time to simplify your accessories a bit.

Choose one statement accessory to avoid over styling and over accessorizing your dresses. This can be a statement earring, necklace, or bracelet. The reason I suggest choosing one statement piece is because it gives you a chance to have fun with your dress accessorizing but will prevent you from over doing it. Less is more with accessories at this time in your life.

best style for women over 40
Lucy Liu (born 1968), Getty Images

Don’t forget that shoes and handbags are also accessories to consider when you’re styling your dresses over 40. The same rule applies here, just make sure it’s not TOO much with your dress. Think about creating a more subtle, streamlined outfit when you’re over 40 to keep you appearing age appropriate.

As an example, if you have a bright red dress keep your shoes and handbag on the neutral side to compliment the red in a stylish way without overpowering you (or the dress). Keep accessories simple with a gold hoop earring and dainty bracelet, for example. It’s an easy look that’s streamlined, classic but modern and fashionable wrapped into one. Style goals, anyone?!

7 Develop Your Personal Style

If you haven’t already, now that you are a woman over 40 it’s the time in your life when you should focus on developing your own personal style. This kind of goes back to what I was saying about choosing classics over trends. Because you’ve experienced different things in your life and are (hopefully) more confident and secure with who you are than ever before it’s essential that you’re dressing accordingly.

hourglass figure
Salma Hayek, 5’2″ (Getty Images)

Worry less about what everyone else is wearing or whether or not someone will look at you strangely if you show up in a certain outfit. Spend more of your time and energy on choosing dresses and styling outfits that fully embrace your personal style in the way that you want. This is such a powerful way to increase your confidence and to appear incredibly age appropriate. When we don’t spend time trying to be something or someone we aren’t (or aren’t any longer) it instantly elevates the way we look in our clothing.

While there are some specific style tips to consider when shopping for the best dresses for women over 40, all in all I want you to have FUN with your style. You deserve it! If you’ve been putting off shopping for a new dress to add to your wardrobe I hope you will take these tips into consideration and they help you to have a more successful shopping trip than ever before. Don’t be afraid to try a couple new dress silhouettes or colors – you may be surprised!

Do you have rectangle body shape?  Wondering how you should dress to flatter your particular body type? What if you are also short, are there styling tips particularly for petite women? You have come to the right place! I will cover all of these in this post.

There are many different ways to call the rectangle body shape. Some people call this pencil body shape, banana shape, H shape, or straight body shape. Regardless how it is labeled, the key is that you do not have much curves. In other words, you come across as straight up and down.

Do you feel like that is you? If you are not sure, read the following.

What is Rectangle Body Shape

First things first, let’s take a look at what is a rectangle shape.

rectangle shape

If you have a rectangle shape, you generally have the following body traits:

  • If you are petite rectangle shape, you have a very athletic frame.
  • Your hips, waistline and shoulders are pretty close in terms of width.
  • You have little to no waist definition.
  • You may feel like you look straight up and down.
  • You gain weight evenly, but may gain more weight through the upper back or neck.
  • On the other hand, you have small bust and your buttocks tend to be flat.

In one word, petite rectangle shape women have a “boyish figure”, and above are the typical features of petite body shape.

However, because human body have some many different variations, most likely not one body would fit into all features of one body type.  If you feel like you have some but not all of the traits above, it is possible you are a combination of inverted triangle and other body types.

Rectangle shaped celebrities

I have always felt the best way to understand what works on a certain body shape and what doesn’t is by observing real life examples. So, who are the rectangle shaped celebs?

One thing you may have heard of is that the rectangle body shape is also known as the model shape. That means, if you happen to be a slender rectangle shape, you will have similar body type as the super models like Miranda Kerr and Kendall Jenner .

What if you are petite (short)? There is still plenty of petite actresses with rectangle shaped body. Natalie Portman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Richie, and Reese Witherspooon amongst the most famous of Hollywood.

rectangle body shape
Natalie Portman,5’3″, Getty Images

What is your strengths and weaknesses?

Each body type has its own strengths and weaknesses. With the rectangle shape, what I wanted to mention is that your strength may happen to be also your weakness. Does that sound confusing? I don’t blame you, but I will tell you why in a second.

Many stylists talk about rectangle body shape as the easiest to dress body type, which is why the fashion industry prefers models to be the rectangle shape.

The rationale?

Because the rectangle shape does not have much curves, this body type is similar to a dress form, which is how the clothes are made according to.

rectangle shaped celebrities
Reese Witherspoon, 5’2″, Getty Images

What that means is that almost ANY clothes would look good on you. That is definitely your big advantage as a rectangle shape.

However, it is one thing to walk down the runway and make every piece of clothing look flawless, it is another thing that you want to look straight up and down in everyday life. In fact, the lack of curves may happen to be the one thing that most rectangle shaped girls are trying very hard to camouflage.

So, there you go, your strength and weakness is quite obvious- depending on how you look at it!

Besides the straight body shape, your athletic build and long legs are also your best assets. That is probably most obvious with Sarah Jessica Parker in her Sex and the City days!

How to style a rectangle body type

To most rectangle shaped women, the key to dress the straight up and down body shape is to create an illusion of curves thus making your boyish shape look more voluptuous through what you wear.

To create the illusion of curves is to make the waist look smaller and butt look fuller.  Asymmetrical styles give a natural waistline.  The asymmetrical dress gives that visual break adding volume and balance. One shoulder shirts and dresses give lightness to the look.

Shorter length always looks great on petite women in general.  The best length is 5 inches above your knees.  Especially with rectangle shape women who most likely have long and lean legs, you should not hesitate to show off those assets through mini dresses and high heels.

Matching set of shorts and shirt are perfect to rectangle body shape.  Shorts emphasize the beautiful legs, while cropped top gives the accurate cutting on waist, thus breaking the body shape H column of rectangle shape.

Best Jeans for Petite Rectangle Shape

Your athletic build allows you to wear boyish clothes as well as a wide range of feminine styles, so you have many choices when it comes to jeans.

Boyfriend jeans might look good on you, given your athletic frame.  However, for petite women, we generally do not recommend boyfriend jeans that is too loose or too big, as that will overwhelm your small body frame.

On the other hand, if you prefer more feminine style, for instance, you want your buttocks to look less flat, then the best petite jeans for you are those with pocket details.  Pockets with flaps will add extra volume and  will make your butt look less flat.  Slit pockets also help to give you more curves back.

Tops with belted or gathered waists make your waistline look smaller.  If they have fullness around the bust and hips then that will create the effect of a very feminine hourglass figure.

If you want to enhance the effect, wear a wide belt to further emphasize the waist line and padded bra to draw more attention to your curves. lowing tops with draping in the body and sleeves and a wide banded waist help create the illusion of an hourglass figure too.

Billowy tops that add volume to the bust with a snug fitting waist will balance out your athletic feature.  Add flutter or princess sleeves for a more dramatic effect.

However, because of your petite height, you should stay away from too much fluffiness to avoid being swamped by the clothes. Shirts with a fitted waist and embellishments around the bust and shoulders will give you a more curvaceous appearance.

Jackets with full or structured shoulders and a nipped-in or belted waist enhance your waistline. Draw attention to your bust with pockets or details. Choose a jacket with a pocketed or flared bottom.

Shorts season is here! Are you ready? If you’re reading this, I’m going to presume you have big thighs. First and foremost – I know there can be a challenge to shopping for and wearing shorts when you have thicker thighs.

I’ve had quite a few conversations with some customers recently, now that the weather is heating up, who have big thighs where they shared that they felt lost when it came to choosing shorts for their body shape. That being said, I wanted to share a few of my tried and true tips on how to choose shorts for big thighs to make your experience a little smoother.

Amongst the 5 body types, the pear shape is the type that typically has prominent thighs. Pear body type also tend to gain weight first on their thighs. Famous pear shaped celebrities include Kim Kardashian, Shakira, Rachel Bilson . I will quote some of their image in this post on how they handle their shorts.

High Waisted Shorts Always Win

High waisted EVERYTHING is pretty much everywhere right now. Have you noticed? It’s hard to miss. Anyways, high waisted shorts are perfection for a woman with big thighs. The high waisted fit of this style of shorts creates the most incredible figure flattery.

When you opt for a higher rise short it creates a shape and accentuates your waistline – this helps to create the illusion of more balance in your shape instead of bringing all the focus to your big thighs AND it makes your legs look longer and leaner. What’s not to love about longer, leaner looking legs – right?

For petite women in particular, what high waist design does is it elevates your natural waistline, making your legs instantly look a lot longer. That might explain why high waist style is a signature look of Kim Kardashian. Whether or not you are Kim’s fan, in this photo she is wearing high waisted shorts to perfection, setting the best example for petite women like her who have big thighs.

Not to mention, high waisted shorts are overall a whole lot more comfortable. I don’t have to tell you how fussy low rise shorts can be to wear on a daily basis – it’s a whole thing. Do yourself a favor and stick to a mid-high rise shorts silhouette to flatter your big thighs. Those are some of the basics to consider when you’re choosing shorts with big thighs, now go find your new favorite pair of shorts to rock all summer long.

Avoid Shorts that are too Tight

Ok, here’s the deal ladies…when you have big thighs, wearing shorts that are SUPER tight aren’t going to be the most flattering option for you. I know, I know…it seems like skin tight shorts are everywhere but trust me on this. Not only will you feel so much more comfortable wearing shorts that have some room in the thigh area (aka aren’t intending into your skin) but they will also be a whole lot more figure flattering.

The problem with wearing super tight shorts is they are going to bring all the focus to your thighs and create the illusion of them appearing bigger than they are. Instead, make sure you’re sticking to shorts that have some room between the shorts and your actual thigh. You don’t need incredibly loose fitting shorts but somewhere in the middle is perfect.

Opt for Side Slit Shorts for Big Thighs

Shorts are smaller garments, there’s less material than a traditional pair of pants (obviously) which is why even the slightest of details can make a difference in the way they fit and flatter your body. I’m sure you’ve tried on countless of different shorts, desperate to find a pair to flatter your big thighs at this point. Don’t underestimate the power of a seemingly TINY detail. When you have big thighs I highly suggest opting for shorts that have side slits.

You may be thinking “what exactly is a side slit?” Well, you’ve probably seen some shorts that have tiny little slits on the side of the shorts. Well, those tiny little slits are your new BFF. Why? Because they’re going to give you a lot more movement to accommodate your big thighs in your shorts. The great thing about side slit shorts is it is a very small detail that won’t drastically change the aesthetic of your entire outfit or the look of the shorts overall.

Pay Attention to the Length

Petite women are no stranger to the concept of paying attention to the length of clothing. You notice the length of the petite dresses, skirts and pants you wear, but don’t forget you need to also make sure you’re considering the length of the shorts you are wearing.

Length of shorts tends to get overlooked because most of us just assume they’re already short…so why worry about the length any further?! WELL since you’re a woman with big thighs, the length is going to make a big impact on how flattering shorts are on your body shape.

This year there are a ton of different shorts trends around, varying lengths being one of them. You’re going to be seeing shorts that are long in length and very short in length, and everything in between. When you have big thighs you should focus on shorts that rest either above or below the widest part of your thigh. In other words, you don’t want the shorts you are wearing to rest at the largest part of your thigh. When you do wear shorts that rest at the largest part of your thigh, they accentuate that area of your body and will often times make them look larger than they are in a non-flattering manner.

In this photo you will find Rachel Bilson wearing dark denim shorts that bypass the thickest part of her thighs, drawing attention to the slender part thus looking very flattering on her.

Since you want to flatter your big thighs and work with what you’ve got, choose the length of your shorts accordingly! Your shorts don’t have to be significantly above or below the largest part of your thighs, just a tad will do.

Don’t Knock Pleats

Pleated shorts?! Yes. Before you think I’m crazy, let me explain. Pleated shorts are a big thigh woman’s DREAM. The reason being is pleats, by default, provide a lot more room and movement on your body because of the way they fit. Basically, pleats allow your shorts to work with your body instead of working against it. Something we all want from a great pair of shorts for the summertime.

If you’re thinking pleated shorts aren’t ‘on trend’, think again. Pleated shorts are all around the stores this spring/summer season. Seriously, you will be shocked how many pleated shorts you stumble upon while you’re out shopping. Not to mention, when you have a pair of shorts that flatter your big thighs, those shorts are classics for you.
