It’s that time of the year again- all we want to do is to wrap ourselves in a nice and warm winter coat. For women under 5’3”, how to pick perfect petite winter coats that not only keep you warm, but also flatters your petite figure?
A princess cut coat (or A-line) coat is cut in long panels without a horizontal join or separation at the waist- it makes your legs look longer and create a willowy silhouette. With a deep V neckline (showing some skin is one of the most important tips for petite dressing!) and defined waistline, it creates a very feminine look.
It is common to think that petite winter coats should go for a shorter version, perhaps hip length. However, if you live you an area with strong winds or nasty winters, then a hip-length coat will not last very long in winter. In fact, above or around knee is also a very flattering length, but remember to go for a single breasted clean cut coat.
I have seen some petite stylist suggesting petite winter coats should not go under the knee- well, when it comes to fashion, there’s always exception to the rules! In cold winter of New York City, I have quite often noticed girls walking by in long and slim wool coats- they look really tall in those kind of coats, but I was often shocked to see them walk close and they are about my height (I’m 5’2″”)! So, this winter, break the rule and pick out a long and lean wool coat- they actually elongate your figure, especially from a distance.
Black, grey and beige are never out of style for the winter, but if you want to stand out, especially for petite girls, we suggest you go for a brighter and stronger color.
